Hollywood, purchased by Harvey H. Wilcox in 1887, was originally named Hollywoodland until it was officially renamed "Hollywood" in 1949. This town served as a real estate investment and a community for building homes, schools, and businesses. However, what set Hollywood apart in the 1900s was a unique spark that transformed Hollywoodland into a global icon. This spark was the emergence of the motion picture industry, which began with silent films and evolved into the era of "talkies." This captivating evolution made the world exclaim, "Hurray for Hollywood!"
The motion picture industry truly invaded Hollywoodland in the 1900s. With cutting-edge technology and favorable weather conditions, Hollywoodland became the birthplace of major movie studios, including Paramount Pictures, Warner Brothers, and Charlie Chaplin's Studios, all of which continue to thrive today. In 1910, D.W. Griffith created the very first motion picture in Hollywoodland, a silent film titled "In Old California."
